What is local SEO?

Local SEO is how you get your business to show up when someone in your area searches for what you do. That's it. No magic, no mystery.

When someone types "best electrician in Huntsville" into Google, local SEO determines who shows up in those top results — and who gets buried on page five where nobody looks.

Why it matters more than you think

Here are three numbers that should get your attention:

  • 46% of all Google searches have local intent
  • 76% of people who search for something nearby visit a business within 24 hours
  • 28% of those searches result in a purchase

The 5 things that actually matter

1. Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important thing you can do for local SEO. Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is what shows up in the map pack — those three results at the top of local searches.

Do this now:

  • Claim your profile at business.google.com
  • Fill out every single field — hours, services, description, categories
  • Add real photos of your business, your work, your team
  • Choose the right primary category (this matters more than you think)

2. Get consistent NAP everywhere

NAP = Name, Address, Phone number. Google checks whether your business information is consistent across the internet. If your address is different on Yelp than it is on your website, Google trusts you less.

Make sure your NAP is identical on:

  • Your website
  • Google Business Profile
  • Facebook
  • Yelp
  • Yellow Pages
  • Any industry-specific directories

3. Get real reviews (and respond to them)

Reviews are one of the strongest ranking signals for local SEO. But it's not just about having a lot of them — you need to respond to every single one, good or bad.

How to get more reviews:

  • Ask happy customers directly (most people will say yes if you ask)
  • Send a follow-up text or email with a direct link to your Google review page
  • Make it easy — the fewer clicks, the more reviews you'll get

4. Build local content on your website

Your website needs to tell Google where you are and what you do. That means having:

  • Your city and service area on your homepage
  • Individual pages for each service you offer
  • Content that mentions your area naturally (not keyword stuffing)
  • A dedicated page for each city you serve

If you're a roofer in Madison, AL, you should have a page that says "Roofing Services in Madison, Alabama" — not just a generic "Our Services" page.

5. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly

Google uses page speed and mobile usability as ranking factors. If your site takes 8 seconds to load on a phone, you're not ranking. Period.

Check your site speed: Google PageSpeed Insights will tell you exactly what needs to be fixed.

What NOT to waste time on

  • Buying backlinks from sketchy websites
  • Keyword stuffing your homepage
  • Paying for "guaranteed #1 rankings" (nobody can guarantee that)
  • Obsessing over meta keywords (Google hasn't used these in years)
